The Story of the White Alsatian

The story of the White Alsatian echoes that of the ugly duckling. Long rejected for its distinctive white fur, it was finally considered a separate breed with characteristics and features of its own.

Also called White German shepherd or Weisser Schweizer Schaferhund in German or White Swiss Shepherd or Berger Blanc Suisse, this breed of dogs was first classified as a mutation of the German shepherd dog until recently when it was finally treated as a separate breed. Recognition of this breed, however, has yet to be accepted universally. The White German shepherd traces its genetic ancestry to old breeds of herding dogs used in farming communities all throughout Europe.
